Polish Logistics Congress LOGISTICS 2004,
which took place in Poznan on 19-21 of May, 2004 was
the seventh in a series of bi-annual logistics conferences,
organised by the Institute of Logistics and Warehousing
since 1992. This was also the second time the enlarged
scale of the event turned it into a congress, in recognition
of the historical importance of Poland's accession to
the European Union.
The enlargement of the EU will soon result in further
increase of cargo flows, both in volume and in range.
It will also increase the importance of well-organised
logistics networks, based on intermodal transport solutions
and logistics centres. That is why 21st century logistics
networks - with their wide range, complex information,
communication and capital relations - have become the
main subject of the congress.
Almost 600 participants representing the whole logistics
community turned Poznań, into the Polish capital of
logistics for a few days. There were the representatives
of science, business and local authorities among the
guests, above one hundred of them foreigners, both from
the EU-15 countries as well as from Central and Eastern
Europe. The guests were able to familiarize themselves
with the subject of logistics networks, discover new
trends and directions of development in the field, as
well as establish valuable new contacts.
The congress comprised three plenary and six thematic
sessions, focused on key components of logistics networks:
the development and use of transport and transshipment
infrastructure, information and communication systems,
co-operation and partnership, as well as aspects of
safety and security, risk and cost in supply chains.
The economic debate conducted by a well-known TV author
Tadeusz Mosz, allowed the participants to realise how
the fluctuating macroeconomic environment influences
the development of logistics in Poland. Prof. Włodzimierz
Rydzkowski (Gdańsk University), Marek Zuber (economist
and financial markets analyst), Stanisław Lepczyński
(President of Kuehne & Nagel Poland), Andrzej Pawlak
(Market Operations Director of Gefco Poland), Grzegorz
Szyszka (Director of Institute of Logistics and Warehousing)
were invited to participate the debate.
The congress participants were able to visit selected
leading companies operating in Poznan and its vicinity,
presenting the latest logistics solutions. These working
sessions raised a great deal of interest among the guests,
giving them possibility to visit such logistics and
manufacturing companies as Kuehne & Nagel, DHL Express,
Panopa, Schenker, Spedpol, Raben, Volkswagen, Wielkopolska
Brewery and Arvato (Bertelsmann).
The third day was devoted to thematic workshops on
logistics project management, inventory management,
the use of structural funds in logistics enterprises
and tracing and tracking. The workshops gathered 133
participants.
This year's event was organised by the POLLOCO (Polish
Centre of Logistics Competence) project supported by
the 5th Framework Programme.
